Smart meters

Smart PAYG has lots of top-up options & helps customers to better understand their energy use. Customers who change their behaviours can make savings on bills.

White Rose Energy is offering smart meters - as standard - to all new customers with existing Pay-As-You-Go meters. The term ‘Pay-As-You-Go’, commonly abbreviated to ‘PAYG’, refers to a modern variation on traditional prepayment style arrangements with both involving adding credit to a physical meter, often called ‘topping up’.

What are smart meters?

Smart meters are modern meters that record real-time information on the amount of energy that you use and transmit this information to White Rose Energy to ensure accurate bills. They also connect wirelessly to your ‘In Home Display’ unit (‘IHD’) to show you detailed information on your energy use and spend.

These meters make it easy for you to top-up and to also monitor how much energy you are actually using, hour by hour, day by day, and so on. This can help you to make small changes to your consumption habits, which will hopefully save you money.

Why should you choose a smart meter?

PAYG customers often find it very inconvenient going to the shops with their prepayment keys or cards to top-up their meter, especially if they are older or have a disability.

With a smart meter, you are automatically connected, through the internet, to a dedicated smart PAYG payment service. This means you can top-up online, but you can also do so over the phone or by text, and the option to visit PayPoint retailers is still open to you as well. This could be the end of last minute sprints to the shop, missing that crucial part of your favourite TV programme, or interrupted slumber at the weekends.

With smart meters, you can:

  • Take control over your energy use - smart meters enable you to see exactly how much energy you are actually using and help you to make choices around when and how to use your appliances more efficiently.
  • Control your energy spending - your smart meter displays your credit levels and can even let you know, automatically, if you’re approaching a set credit limit.
  • Top-up your way – your smart PAYG top up card can be used to top up online, over the phone, by text, or at your nearest PayPoint retailer.

Top-up options

In person

Take your top-up card to any PayPoint outlet. It is important that you keep the receipt issued to you at the PayPoint outlet. This is because there is sometimes a slight communication delay between the PayPoint terminal and your meter. If this happens you can use the code on your receipt to manually update your new credit onto the meter. However, this should rarely happen and usually everything should work properly.

Remember!

You may not be able to top up at your usual location as this will depend on whether that retailer is a PayPoint outlet. To find out where your nearest PayPoint retailer is please use their website: PayPoint.com.

Online

To top up online go to https://whiteroseenergypayments.paypoint.com/Energy/

Over the phone

Call us on 0800 022 3553 to make a payment.

By text message

To use this service you must register for a White Rose Energy online account. This requires the input of the following details: your top-up card number, mobile phone number, and payment card information. Once you've set this up you will be able to top-up by sending a text message*. Click here to register for an account, if you haven't already done so, and please call our customer service team if you have any problems.

To top-up using this method simply open up a new text message draft and enter the word 'Pay', followed by your top-up card number, the amount you would like to top-up, and your 3-digit card security code, being sure to separate each element with a space. The text message should be sent to 0115 8241186.

An example of how you'd set out a text message for a £10 top-up is given below:

The amount you have chosen to top-up by will be automatically sent to your meter and you will receive a text message receipt (please allow up to two hours for this to arrive). The receipt will include a 20, 40, or 60 digit ‘top-up code‘, which you can use to manually top-up the meter if the credit does not arrive at the meter automatically. However, this will only happen in very rare circumstances. if you don't know how to manually top-up the meter, please follow the instructions in your smart meter guide, which you should have received when your opened an account with White Rose Energy.

* Text messages are charged at your standard local network rate. Please note that you will need to send 2 separate text messages if you are topping-up both your gas and electricity supplies; one for each top-up card number.

** You can top-up in whole pounds only, i.e. no pence.

Minimum top-up

Remember!

The minimum top up amount per fuel is £5 so you’ll need to top up £5’s worth of gas and £5 of electricity to get started if you have a dual fuel supply.
